This weekend I have been away celebrating one of my oldest friends upcoming wedding. We all had a fantastic time here in Cumbria. We spent most of our time in our cabin, which was on the edge of some beautiful woods. We had a fire roaring away, pjs on and plenty eating and drinking.
This time of year there are plenty of pinecones on the ground. Unless you are blessed with warm weather the pinecones will be closed, but if you bring them indoors and place in a warm place they will slowly open up. I collected some whilst we were away, I think my friends think I am crackers, but I use them all over the house. In autumn they are used as part of my autumnal display, in Christmas I add them to my wreath and during the warmer months when our fire isn’t in use I have them in the fireplace with fairy lights, as I hate seeing an empty fire.
The autumnal colours in the Lake District are amazing at the moment, the trees are clinging onto their leaves, which are beautiful shades of gold, orange, red and green, and when they are reflected in the lakes you get double the effect.
The prettiest native foliage at the moment I think in the UK is the beech tree. Beech trees are sometimes used in hedges as they hold on to their leaves throughout winter even though they are deciduous. This process is called Marcescience.
On our last night as we walked back to our cabin, a barn owl flew above our heads, so low some of us actually ducked down, it landed on the path behind us and posed for photographs.
Nature is amazing x

An amazing forest holiday amongst the best that nature has to offer. I’m in love with our little barn owl xx
